I recently learned there is a movement brewing among the membership of AARP to bring the organization into the climate fight. Since AARP is not one of the “usual environmental suspects,” and also reaches across all partisan divides, it could be a political game-changer. That’s why I signed the AARP member petition asking AARP to make the climate emergency a priority for our generation.

If you are an AARP member, I’d like to invite you to sign here: https://supportaarpclimateaction.org/petition, and add your voice to the thousands of AARP members who have already signed. If you are not a member, you can also pledge to join when AARP joins the climate fight.

Think of what it would mean to have AARP’s magazine—with the largest circulation in the country—raising awareness of the climate crisis. Think of the political clout AARP could have, with its 38 million members of the generation that most reliably contributes and votes. Think of the impact of having grandparents show up in every school district in the country to support students striking for climate action.

As the climate crisis heats up (literally!), there is increasing indication that AARP understands that it must address the causes and impacts of the climate crisis. After all, their central mission is to protect the health, financial security, and livable communities of seniors and their families—all threatened by global warming.
